The best sesame chicken in Los Angeles

MUNCHIE REVIEW – Wok Master

Location: 7170 Beverly Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90036

Phone: (323) 934-2999

Style: Chinese

Bring about: $6 – $11

Wok Master used to be Wok Fast, or as my father called it, “Wok Slow.” Delivery took almost two hours and the guy taking your order had to ask three or four times just to get it down. The food was mediocre at best, and I avoided it like the plague.

I was getting stoned with a buddy one day when we passed by the Beverly Plaza, a mini-mall in the Hasidic Jewish district of Hancock Park. The mall is pretty stoner friendly – there’s a Gamestop, a Papa John’s, and an outrageously good yogurt spot called Toppers that’s been in the area since I was a kid.

My friend and I noticed the sign at Wok Fast had changed. Stoned and hungry, we gave the newly crowned Wok Master a try.

Everything had changed. For $7.99, I got a giant a la carte platter of sesame chicken with a big side of white rice. The sauce is the perfect cross of sweet and spicy and smothers the chicken. Mix in some of the white rice for texture, and each bite packs just about everything you need.

Wok Master’s lemon chicken is another gem. It comes as a dry breaded chicken with a large dish of hot orange sauce. Dunk the chicken in the sauce before taking a bite and prepare for a crispy orange rush of goodness.

The fried rice and chow mein is standard fare, but worth the low price, and a big side of fried pork wontons is just $3.99. They also serve Dragon Wings, dry fried wings with a tasty sauce, as a specialty item.

The Wok has been good to me at lunch as well, offering hearty servings of entrees and rice with an egg roll from 11 AM – 4 PM for $5.99. Grab one and take it to Pan Pacific Park on a sunny day (it’s right down the street).

These delicious wontons are only $3.99

MUNCHIE REVIEW – Lucy’s Drive In

Location: 1373 S. La Brea Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90019

Style: Mexican

Bring about: $4 – $7

The warm yellow glow of Lucys' sign ("borrowed" from WeezerMonkey.com)

If you grew up in Los Angeles, chances are you’ve been to a Lucy’s. The drive thru offers a convenience most taquerias do not with no drop in quality or taste.

What makes Lucy’s special is the flavor in their meat. The carne asada is loaded with flavor, the chorizo is spicy and the al pastor has an unbelievable kick. They also use a sharper cheese than most Mexican places, giving tacos, quesadillas, and burritos a tasty offset for the meat.

Lucy’s also makes American food. A combo with a burger, fries and a drink costs just $4. The $2 al la carte bag of fries is loaded and easily serves two people.

If you’re on the west end of Mid-City and need some munchies, Lucy’s is convenient, cheap and very, VERY tasty.

Burritos are loaded with meat, cheese and goodness

MUNCHIE REVIEW – El Atacor

Location: 2622 N. Figueroa St. Los Angeles, CA 90065 (off the Figueroa exit on the 110).

Style: Mexican

Bring about: $4 – $7

I go way back with El Atacor. It was my stoner food spot in high school, a stones throw away from Eagle Rock where my friend’s guest house was our after hours zone. Cypress Park was not a runoff spot for Echo Park hipsters who fell out of East Sunset Blvd.’s price range. White people didn’t live in Cypress Park and certainly didn’t hang out there. The first time I looked at the menu, a drunk Mexican gentleman walked up to me and spit out, in broken English, “eyy vato, get the super burrito, ees big like a donkey’s dick!”

Donkey dick wasn’t one of the meat selections, but I ordered the burrito anyway. What I got was a piece of art, a gigantic, weighty ode to popular combination of meat, cheese, rice and beans. Metaphorically speaking, this wasn’t a donkey’s dick, this was a beluga whale!

Since that night, I’ve eaten countless meals at this place. Their meat tacos are loaded and tasty, and their one-of-a-kind fried potato tacos literally melt as you bite into them. Stoned with a lot of friends? The super nachos make a great munchie.

The neighborhood has changed, but El Atacor hasn’t, which is why you’ll always find me there with bloodshot eyes.

My most recent Atacor order - potato tacos!

Dino's sign deceives customers, suggests burgers are the specialty item

MUNCHIE REVIEW – Dino’s Chicken and Burgers
Location: 2575 West Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90006 (just east of Pico and Normandie).
Styles: American, Greek, Mexican
Bring about: $6

Dino’s presents the common stoner with one great challenge: ignore their menu full of delicious burgers, pastrami and sides. No matter what the menu says, Dino’s serves one item – the half chicken plate.

You can order it 100 ways – “half chicken,” “the plate,” “the one with the sauce” – the kitchen pretty much makes them non-stop. Dino’s employees haul armloads of styrofoam platters to the pickup window and move them off the line like school box lunches. At $5.50 a pop, they might as well be.

The plate consists of the following – one half chicken, one large serving of fries and two corn tortillas (which end up as one giant corn tortilla, combining in the heat of the box). The chicken and fries are smothered in Dino’s patented sauce, a thin, tangy marinade loaded with herbs and spices. The initial tang outburst makes your taste buds contract, then the spicy kick that follows expands them again. It’s a party for anyone with cottonmouth.

An ocean of chicken, potato, tang and spice awaits!

We don’t recommend smoking during a Dino’s grub session. If you have the urge, use a relatively flavorless bud like Super Gu so the combining tastes of pot and sauce don’t ruin your meal. We do recommend smoking before and after eating, but you might want to rinse your mouth.

Throw some chicken and fries into one of Dino's tortillas for a makeshift taco delight.
